In Cartesian Dualism the mind is seen as non-physical (ghost) that inhabits and interacts with a mechanical body (machine)
Ryle thought the mind doesn’t exist and can’t be the seat of the self
The self comes from behaviour - we are just a bundle of behaviours
He thought Descartes made a category error
What is a category error?
Put something in a category which is intangible with reality
Ryle’s example of category error:
Someone is visiting a university and is shown a number of libraries. They ask where the university is, but the university encapsulates everything on campus
What is materialism?
The belief that only physical matter exists and that everything can be explained in terms of material causes and processes
What is Dawkins?
Materialist
Quote from Dawkins
“Life is just bytes and bytes of digital information“
What does John Hick believe?
The body and mind are the same thing, and on death they die together
What does Daniel Dennett believe?
There is no metaphysical part to us
What did Ivan Pavlov believe?
Behaviourist. Believes behaviours are learned involuntarily so there must be an unconscious part of us. We can store information without knowing so something must register it
