    • Powerful symbol of how the WC were treated like dirt in the capitalist society. Evaswallowed disinfectant to try + cleanse herself of her status they killingherself. The inspector's graphic + brutal lang used to describe her deathsymbolises how brutally she was treated + how she had no other choice.
    • Eva smith was a vehicle to challenge stereotypes about the WC. WC thought to be immoral. Also when mrs b was in disbelief that alderman megarty was being weird w/ eva bc he's UC. Eva challenges those stereotypes, she has a moral compass - stands up for her strikers, rejects erics stolen money when he offers it to her. contrasts w/ mrs b views + when gerald breaks up w/ her he said she was very 'gallant' about it = heroic, brave.
  • Eva smith was a vehicle to challenge stereotypes about the WC. the UC equated that class with morality, more rich = more moral thought opp for WC.

  • ·       She is used to explore social injustice at that time. at the start sheila desc as a 'prtty girl' inspec describes eva as this when sheila asks her if she was prtty. Priestly's use of the exact same language is purposeful bc he wasnts to show there is no real diff between these 2 girls - only diff was how much money they were born into. the outcome of these girls lives were so dramatically diff just bc of their social class. - eva's character highlights this
