Criticisms of the New Right on Diversity

• Oakley 1997: New Right wrongly assume familial roles are fixed by biology - instead cross cultural studies have shown greater variation in family roles. Instead, the New Right perspective is a direct negative reaction against feminism
• Conventional Nuclear family is favoured by New Right as it is a patriarchal institution which oppresses women and is fundamental cause of gender inequality
• No evidence of children from lone parent families to be more delinquent than children from two parent families in the same class
• Smart 2011: as lone parent families are more likely to in poverty - it is more likely to cause the breakdown of relationships
