  • Infectious Disease
    • Many hospitals turned away people with infectious diseases such as leprosy (a contagious disease originating in the Middle East) were sent to Lazar Houses (built outside of towns).
  • Funding
    • Hospitals funded by Christian Church & depended on charity for money.
    • Poor and sick could receive help in monasteries.
    • Hospitals for people who could afford it and weren't contagious.
    • Mental Asylums were for the mentally ill.
  • Routine
    • Hospital treatment was based around sin, praying and preparing to die.
    • Disease seen as a punishment from God.
    • Priests say mass each day.
    • Rest and Pray.
  • Types of Hospitals
    • Lazar Hospitals: Lepers (people with leprosy).
    • Monasteries: For the poor/sick.
    • Bedlum: For the mentally ill.
    • Almshouses: For pregnant women.
