Heat, Work, and Energy

Cards (8)

  • Thermodynamics:
    • A branch of physics looking at how changes in energy, work and the flow of heat influence each other.
    • It can explain the workings of an internal combustion engine, a refrigerator, and the sun.
    • It is mainly concerned with the transformation of heat into mechanical energy.
    • It plays an important part in technology.
  • First Law of Thermodynamics
Heat is the form of energy, it has the capacity to do work. When the law of conservation of energy is applied to heat systems.
  • First Law of Thermodynamics
    • Whenever the heat is added to a system, an equal amount of some other forms of energy appears.
    • Work can be converted into heat, in the same manner that heat can be converted into work.
    • Energy is not created nor destroyed
    • Example: The food taken into the body gives the body heat energy. This energy enables the body to move and work.
  • First Law of Thermodynamics
The first law of thermodynamics relates the various forms of kinetic and potential energy in a system to the work, which a system can perform, and to the transfer of heat. This law is sometimes taken as the definition of internal energy.
  • The first law of thermodynamics allows for many possible states of a system to exist.
  • Work:
    • Motion against an opposing force
    • The primary foundation of thermodynamics and of the first law.
    • Kinetic energy—the energy in motion.
