    • Black Power Movement developed- mid 1960's- it meant different things to different people
    • Most white people associated Black Power with violence but for many black people it meant political & social independence & racial pride
  • Reasons Black Power being Developed:
    • Ghetto problem- poverty, poor housing, poor schools, discrimination & police brutality
    • Influence of Malcolm X
    • Ghetto residents agreed with Malcolm that organisations- NAACP & SCLC were too slow to help & insufficiently focused on ghetto issues
    • SNCC & the CORE became disillusioned by slow progress towards equality & by the lack of Federal protection in the Mississippi Freedom Summer & elected radical leaders- Stokely Carmichael- first popularised the phrase 'Black Power- during the Meredith March-1966
