  • Acids is a water soluble base
    Alkaline is hydrogen donors
  • Acids - tastes sour, turns blue Litmus paper red, reacts with bases to form salt (neutralisation) and pH less than 7
  • Examples of alkaline:
    • Oven cleaner
    • Bleach
    • Eggs
    • Baking soda
    • Soap
    • Ammonia
  • Acids neutralises alkaline and alkaline neutralises acids
  • Examples of acids - vinegar, lemon
  • A pH of 7 is neutral (water)
  • Turmeric, red cabbage juice and beetroot juice are plants with their own indicators
  • Word equations:
    hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide (alkaline) -> sodium chloride + water
  • Alkaline - tastes bitter, feel slippery, turns red Litmus paper blue, reacts with acids to release neutral salts and have a pH greater than 7
