  • A revolt by the Spartacist League (a small group of Communist) in January 1919
  • Led by Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht
  • Started when, on 4 January 1919, Ebert sacked Emil Eichhorn, the police chief in Berlin, who was popular with the workers
  • Workers called a general strike in Berlin and on 6 January and 100,000 workers took to the streets
  • The government were unable to put the uprising down, so called in the Freikorps. This showed the weaknesses of the German government
  • However, the uprising lacked widespread popular support
  • Luxemburg and Liebknecht were killed
