distillation
seperates out mixtures that contain
liquids
simple distillation
is used to
seperate
a liquid from a solution
you can use simple distillation to separate
pure
water from
sea
water
first you have a
flask
that contains the solution you are trying to
separate
why is the flask is sealed at the top with a bun?
so that no
gas
can
escape
you place a
thermometer
inside of the
bung
to measure the temperature inside of the flask
what is connected to the flask ?
a
libig condensor
which contains a water jacket that contains a continous stream of
water
at the end of the
condenser
there is a beaker to collect the
pure
liquid
the
bunsen burner
is placed
under
the flask
heat
the mixture and it will start to
evaporate
the mixture which makes the pressure force the liquid down to through the condensor
2. once the liquid is heated up the
vapours
will cool and condense into a liquid which will run down the condenser and run into the
beaker
3. when the solution has
evaporated
you are left with pure water inside the beaker and
salt
in the flask
