simple distalliation

• distillation seperates out mixtures that contain liquids
• simple distillation is used to seperate a liquid from a solution
• you can use simple distillation to separate pure water from sea water
• first you have a flask that contains the solution you are trying to separate
• why is the flask is sealed at the top with a bun?

  so that no gas can escape
• you place a thermometer inside of the bung to measure the temperature inside of the flask
• what is connected to the flask ?

  a libig condensor which contains a water jacket that contains a continous stream of water
• at the end of the condenser there is a beaker to collect the pure liquid
• the bunsen burner is placed under the flask
• 1. heat the mixture and it will start to evaporate the mixture which makes the pressure force the liquid down to through the condensor
• 2. once the liquid is heated up the vapours will cool and condense into a liquid which will run down the condenser and run into the beaker
• 3. when the solution has evaporated you are left with pure water inside the beaker and salt in the flask
