Under Lenin attacks on the church intensified. Priests were arrested and churches closed down. Enemies were identified and attacked, encouraged informally with the 'loot the looters' campaign

The Cheka was established in December 1917 which used terror to control opposition
The GPU was established which could arbitrarily arrest and imprison
Opposition press was banned and Kadets were banned in 1917.
Propaganda was used extensively to spread communism which replaced the church
Censorship was systematic and all publications had to be approved by Gavlitt. Other parties were banned and there were show trials in 1921 which resulted in exile
