  • SETTING - refers to where and when the story occurs.
  • The setting can be real or imaginary, and it can be specific or general.
  • In some cases, the setting is just as important as the other elements in the story because it can help to create a certain mood or atmosphere.
  • CHARACTER - refers to the people (or animals) that populate a story.
  • POINT OF VIEW - refers to the perspective from which an author tells a story.
  • Authors can choose three different points of view; first person, second person, and third person.
  • THEME
    • the central idea or message.
    • it is what the story is ultimately about.

  • CONFLICT - refers to the struggle between two opposing forces. It is what drives the plot forward and creates tension.
  • TYPES OF CONFLICTS
    • Man vs. Man
    • Man vs. Self
    • Man vs. Nature
    • Man vs. Society
    • Man vs. Technology
    • Man vs. Supernatural
  • MAN VS. MAN - conflict arises when one character tries to dominate another character.
  • MAN VS. SELF - conflict arises within a single character as he/she struggles with his/her own thoughts, feelings, desires, etc.
  • MAN VS. NATURE - conflict arises when humans try to control nature but are unsuccessful.
  • MAN VS. SOCIETY - conflict arises when an individual goes against society's norms and values.
  • MAN VS. TECHNOLOGY - conflict arises when technology fails us or we fail it.
  • MAN VS. SUPERNATURAL - conflict arises when supernatural beings threaten human life.
  • PLOT - this is the sequence of events in the story, and it can be divided into three parts; the beginning, the middle, and the end.
  • The BEGINNING sets up the conflict and introduces the main characters.
  • The MIDDLE is where the conflict is resolved.
  • The ENDING is where everything is tied up.
  • EXPOSITION - the beginning of the story that introduces;

  • RISING ACTION - events before the climax; Characters attempt to solve the problem, but fails.
  • CLIMAX - The turning point; the point of greatest suspense.
  • FALLING ACTION - Action and events that occur after the climax.
  • RESOLUTION - End of the story where the conflicts of problems are solved.
  • PROTAGONIST - Main character, hero or star of the show.
  • ANTAGONIST - Opposes the main character and usually causes the conflict or problem.
  • LOVE INTEREST - The object of the main character's desire.
  • CONFIDANT - Protagonist's best buddy or sidekick.
  • DYNAMIC - A character who undergoes significant internal CHANGE throughout the course of a story.
    • Changeable character.
  • STATIC - A character who remains largely the same throughout the course of the storyline.
    • Personality or character doesn't change throughout the story.
