Aim- investigate wether an UCS can be linked with a NS to produce CR
Procedure - dog placed in a chamber- removes extraneous variables
paired NS of metronome with food 20 times
dog produced UCS of saliva
metronome was presented without food
cannula attacked to dogs mouth to measure saliva
Findings - after 9 seconds salivation started
45seconds = 11 drops of salivation
Conclustion -NS paired with UCS forms CR such as saliva production
Strengths of pavlov
high internalvalidity - sound proof chamber to remove external sounds distracting the dog. Collection of saliva in cannula , clear response to metronome = cause and effect relationship
clinical applications - eating behaviours - obesity understood Jenson et al overweight children string association between cues that predict food and salivation response - developed systematic desensitization
Weakness of Pavlov
issue’s generalising animal studies as humans have large cerebral cortex and more complex cognitive processes
