  • Random method of access
    Data can be open directly regardless of how it is physically stored
  • Sequential method of access
    Data must be processed in the order of how it is physically stored
  • Optical character recognition (scanner)
    A device that reads characters directly from documents based on their shape and position on the source document
  • Point-of-sale recorder
    A device connected to a computer that takes place in a cash register or any similar device, which allows instant recording of transactions and is capable of keeping perpetual inventory
  • Output devices
    Translate processed data into a form understandable by the user
  • Plotter
    • A device used to print graphical output on paper, it interprets computer commands and makes lines/drawings on paper using multi-coloured automated pens
  • Data storage
    Serves as the warehouse of data processed by a computer, such as a hard disk. This can either be fixed or removable
  • Operating system
    A group of computer programs that monitor and control all the input, output, processing and storage devices and operations on a computer

    Converts each source code instruction to object code as it is executed

    • While large and powerful, but not as large and powerful as a mainframe computer
  • Microcomputer
    • Small computer such as a personal computer or laptop
  • Computer software
    Refers to the configuration of hardware and software that is intended for a specific purpose
  • Decision support system
    Computer-based information that combines models and data to resolve non-structured problems with extensive user involvement
  • Management information system
    A system designed to provide past, present and future information for planning, organizing, and controlling the operations of an organization
