• After Romulus' death the senators couldn't decide who should succeed him. So each senator ruled for 5 days. The commoners complained and insisted that a king be chosen by them.
• The senators passed a decree that the king had to be approved by them
• The senators settled on Numa Pompilius, a Sabine famous for his sence of justice and devotion to the gods
• But Numa wouldn't take the throne if the god hadn't decreed it and so they held an augury
