  • Negative impact: Loss of skilled workers
Poland is a donor region as many Polish people leave their country to find work elsewhere. An impact of migration on donor countries is the loss of skilled workers from the population. The loss of over two million people from Poland since 2004 has had an important impact on the economy and society in Poland.
  • Brain drain
A negative impact of outmigration is the loss of talent from a donor region, e.g., nurses from the Philippines migrated to Ireland. It is usually the most educated and younger sections of society who migrate. The state of the Philippines has invested in their training and this investment is then lost. The donor region is left with a lack of educated and highly-skilled workers. This may lead to a failure to attract investment from MNCs who require skilled labour. This then furthers the economic problems of already under-developed donor regions.
  • As the educated/skilled workers have migrated, this leaves only the elderly and children. This can create an ageing population. The remaining elderly population may find it difficult to retrain or up-skill.
