• Physical cause of the flood:

  The river has a very gentle gradient, so water is slow to leave the river channel. In times of heavy rainfall, the river cannot cope with the amount of water entering it from its tributaries, so it bursts its banks and floods occurs.
• Human cause of the flood:

  During the Celtic Tiger era, builders purchased lands on the floodplain of the river. They built housing estates on the natural floodplains, which meant that floodwater from the river had nowhere to go during times of heavy rainfall.
