Meredith March

• James Meredith- first black American student to enter University of Mississippi
• 1966- planned to march through Mississippi to encourage black voter registration & to challenge the 'overriding fear that dominates the day-to-day life of black people in the US'
• After march- he was shot by a white man & hospitalised
• • Carmichael's SNCC and King's SCLC took up the March
  • Carmichael was arrested for putting up a sleeping tent in a field & when released furiously urged the burning of 'every courthouse in Mississippi'
  • King's followers chanted 'Freedom Now'
  • Carmichael's chanted 'Black Power'
