    • Drew national attention to the deep divisions within the civil rights movement- widely reported that Carmichael had insisted upon the exclusion of whites from the March but King had refused to agree
    • The phrase 'Black Power' wasn't new but the March gave it national prominence
    • Respected black newspaper the Chicago Defender- ' this is a new day... the doctrine of passive resistance as preached by Dr King is ebbing (there is a new) determination to meet fire with fire'
    • The March brought Carmichael to the attention of white people & to the forefront of the black struggle
