EARTHQUAKES

Cards (13)

  • Earthquake
What happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another
  • Fault/Fault plane
    • The surface where the earth blocks slip
  • Hypocenter
The location below the earth's surface where the earthquake starts
  • Epicenter
The location directly above the hypocenter on the surface of the earth
  • Main shock
    The largest, main earthquake
  • Aftershocks
Smaller earthquakes that occur afterwards in the same place as the main shock
  • Seismograph
Instruments used to record the motion of the ground during an earthquake
  • Intensity
A number (written as a Roman numeral) describing the severity of an earthquake in terms of its effects on the earth's surface and on humans and their structures
  • Magnitude
A measure of earthquake size that remains unchanged with distance from the earthquake
  • No available technology that give an accurate earthquake prediction
  • Stages in Conducting Earthquake Drill
    1. Planning/Organizing
    2. Developing an Evacuation Plan
    3. Orientation prior to Earthquake drill
    4. Actual Conduct of Earthquake Drill
  • Phases of an Earthquake Drill
    1. ALARM siren/bell rings for 1 minute ongoing "ground shaking or earthquake"
    2. RESPONSE perform "DUCK, COVER and HOLD" during the "shaking"
    3. EVACUATION after the "shaking"
    4. Assembly at the designated evacuation area, the 'evacuees' must be grouped together
    5. Head Count Team leaders should check and make sure all 'evacuees' are accounted for
    6. Evaluation An evaluation of the drill must be conducted to identify problems encountered during the drill and how this can be corrected in future earthquake drills
