  • Basic Response Procedures
    1. Get out of the building
    2. Don't assume that anyone else has already called the fire department
    3. Calling your friends & family may not be of immediate help
    4. Stay calm when you call the fire department
  • If you are stuck in a room & there is a fire outside the door

    1. Feel the door with the back of your hand
    2. Stuff the cracks around the door
    3. Call BFP and tell them exactly where you are located
    4. Wait at a window and signal for help
    5. If possible, open the window at the top and bottom
  • If your clothes catch on fire use STOP DROP & ROLL TECHNIQUE
    1. Do not run
    2. Stop where you are, drop to the ground & roll back and forth
    3. Spread across flat on the ground
    4. Roll from your back to your front repeatedly
    5. After the flames are extinguished, get up & remove the clothing
  • The R.A.C.E. ACRONYM AND FIRE EXTINGUISHER USE

    1. RESCUE anyone in immediate danger
    2. ALARM: sound the alarm
    3. CONFINE the fire
    4. EXTINGUISH the fire or EVACUATE the area
  • PROPER USE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS (P.A.S.S.)

    1. PULL the pin
    2. AIM the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire
    3. SQUEEZE or press the handle
    4. SWEEP from side to side
  • Fire emergency evacuation plan (FEEP)

    A written document that includes the action to be taken by all staff in the event of a fire and the arrangements for calling the fire brigade
  • Fire safety and evacuation plans must show how you have
    • A clear passageway to all escape routes
    • Clearly marked escape routes that are as short and direct as possible
    • Enough exits and routes for all people to escape
    • Emergency doors that open easily
    • Emergency lighting where needed
    • Training for all to know the evacuation plan and how to use the escape routes
    • A safe meeting point for everyone
  • Workplace/School Fire Procedure
    1. Sound the fire alarm loudly
    2. Evacuate following fire procedures
    3. Exit using the nearest fire exit
    4. Avoid elevators; use emergency stairs
    5. Walk calmly to the assembly area
    6. Don't delay for belongings; exit promptly
    7. Assemble at the fire evacuation area
    8. Stay at the assembly area for accountability
    9. Follow rescuers' instructions; don't return inside

    1. Check door warmth; don't open if warm
    2. Seal door cracks to prevent smoke
    3. Call emergency services with location
    4. Signal for help from a window
    5. Open window top and bottom for ventilation
