  • Tribal Age
    • “acoustic era”. the age before humans invented writing as a form of communication.
    • Cave paintings - also known as “parietal art”, are numerous paintings and engravings found on cave walls or ceilings around 38 000 BCE.
  • Information is A broad term that is derived from study, experiences, or instructions.
  • Media - The Latin word “medius”, which means “middle”. plural of medium, which refers to the tool people use to mediate or facilitate the transfer of communication between a sender and a receiver.
  • Perspective is built from knowledge structures (or sets of organized information in your memory).
    • Motion Picture - also known as film or movie, is a series of still photos on film, projected in rapid succession onto a screen by means of light.
  • Mass Media is the means of communication that reach large numbers of people in a short time, such as television, newspapers, magazines, and radio.
  • Newspaper - A lightweight, serial publication that comes out regularly (daily, weekly, or monthly), and contains news on current events of special or general interest
    • Tertiary Sources consists of summaries and collections of both primary and secondary sources. Not always considered to be acceptable materials for academic research as they only provide overviews of the original references.
  • Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning
  • Pre-industrial Age  - In this age, People discovered fire, developed paper from plants, and forged weapons and tools with stone, bronze, copper, and iron.
    • Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press that reproduced books by thousands. 
  • Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of writing. This means of communication was used for over 3,000 years in 15 different languages.
    • Telegraph - is used for long-distance communication by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. 
    • Papyrus - is made up from pith of papyrus plant. It was used in ancient times as a writing surface to designate documents written on its sheets, rolled up to scrolls.
  • Traditional Media - Media experience is limited and One - directional. Sense receptors used are very specific.
  • Data - Unstructured facts and figures create the least impact on the receiver (Thierauf, 1999).
  • Information Literacy - It is a set of abilities that enables an individual to recognize when information is needed; and locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.
    1. PRIVACY - As defined by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, It is the “state of being alone or being away from public attention”.
  • Tabloid Newspaper - Half the size of a broadsheet. It is intended for the masses, with its price practically lower than broadsheets. There are about 23 of this in the Philippines.
    • PRINT MEDIA Consist of paper and ink, and reproduces in a printing process that is traditionally mechanical. It is the oldest form of media.
  • BROADCAST MEDIA - It is a form of mass communication that utilizes radio and television to transmit messages and programs via the airspace”.
    • Thomas Edison (1877) - He introduced the cylinders for his phonograph. This was followed by other forms of sound recordings. 
  • CDs - Emerged as the dominant type of recording in the early 1980s until digital formats were created in the late 1990s to early 2000s.
    • Film Camera and Projectors Were invented in the 1880s by Thomas Edison.
  • Columbia Record (1948) -Introduced long-playing (LP) 331/3-rpm disks, beginning a new mass medium since print was developed.
  • The first radio signals were transmitted by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 (Who used Morse code through his invention wireless telegraph).
  • The oldest radio station is DZRH.
  • Television - Developed from the technology used in radio.
  • NEW MEDIA -refers to digital media that are interactive, incorporating two-way communication. And involving a form of computing (Logan, 2010).
  • Philippine Broadcasting System (PBS) -A government-owned radio broadcasting company is known to be the pioneer for development broadcasting with its broad news and public affairs program.
  • MEDIA CONVERGENCE -It refers to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and platforms through digitization and computer networking.
  • Books are now digitized, television programs are available online, and newspapers are turned into digital formats. This melding of print, electronic, and photographic media into digitized form is also called TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE
  • Indigenous Media -a form of media conceptualized, produced, and circulated by indigenous people as vehicles for communication, specifically for cultural preservation, cultural and artistic expression, political self-determination, and cultural sovereignty
  • Information Sources are the producers or givers of information. these also serve as the means by which people record information for future consumption.
  • secondary Source  -provides information obtained through a number of primary sources and has undergone editing or interpretation.

  • Library - a building or room that contains a collection of books, periodicals, and/or audio-visual materials
  • Primary Source -an original, uninterpreted, or “first-hand” material of information, created by the person(s) directly involved in an activity or an event. 
  • Marshall McLuhan, in his essay "The Medium is the Message" (1964), said that the media shape and control the scale and form of human association and action.
