Established in late 1789 after the Constituent Assembly was forced to move to Paris.
It aimed to preserve the gains of the revolution, as well as ensuring the stability of the city, in order to protect the property and interests of the bourgeoisie.
Charged high entrance fees and tended to be supported by wealthy liberal constitutional monarchists. It was very popular with 1200 members in Paris.
Led by Robespierre.
After the flight to Varennes, Robespierre set up a revolution to demand the removal of the king.
