• Formed in the belief that the reforms of the constituent assembly fell far short of the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Rights of Man.
• Opposed the idea of active and passive citizens and called for direct democracy instead.
• Only cost two sols per month and this fee was well in the range of most Parisians, making it more popular.
• Regular speakers included: Danton, Desmoulins, Marat and Brissot.
