    (Compare question)
Vertigo - Cinematography. Hitchocks use of God's eye view shots. Infleunce - Hitchcock went to a catholic school. Example - When Madeliene got thrown off the roof, and when Judy falls off the roof. Shows Scottie is over his vertigo. It means the spectators are helpless and far away from the chaos. Example in other films - 'North by Northwest' when someone's died inside the UN. God's eye view of the man accused of murder escaping

Cinematography - Dolly zooms - used to show the extent of Scotties vertigo. Makes the spectators feels uneasy and possibly dizzy. Examples - at the start when Scottie falls and looks down at the floor from the roof, and when he's running up the stairs to try and save Madeleine
  • Vertigo - Cinematography and editing are cruical in expressing a clear auteur signature (Compare question)
Editing - spiral motif. Used to symbolise Scotties decent into madness and obsession with Madeline. Examples - during the opening scene, and then when Scottie has dreams about Madeliene. Linked with subjective camera work, because it immerses the spectator in the characters perspective.
  • Examples of Pure/silent cinema in Vertigo (auteur)
Scottie first setting eyes on Madeleine to him sat in his car - no dialogue, but we know Scottie has taken up the job
When Judy rips up the letter she has just written and puts her suitcase back in the wardrobe - no dialogue, but we know she's going to stay
Scottie seeing Judy's necklace - no dialogue, but the Soviet montage shows us that Scottie has realised Judy was Madeleine
Dolly Zooms throughout - reflection of Scotties vertigo
  • Hitchcock as the 'Master of Suspense'
Hitchcock adapted the original book to show the ending at the start - master of 'the bomb under the table' theory - the spectators know what Scottie does not through the flashback of the events that happened in the tower, and Judy's internalised monologue when writing the letter
  • Hitchcock's use of pure cinema can be related to the auteur theory. Sarris = Technical competence and ability to storytell and Truffaunt = because Hitchcock uses his history of working in both silent cinema and German cinema in his films
  • Vertigo and auteur

Theme of Voyeurism - subjective camerawork - POV of Scottie following Madeleine around + Scottie meeting Madeleine in Eddie's
  • Vertigo and auteur

However, it could be argued that Vertigo is a collaborative process as Bernard Hermann's score adds to moments of tension and Edith Head's costume design also adds to the storyline
