  • What do catholics believe about the story?
Jesus spoke directly to peter and said that he (peter) would be the rock on which the church would be built. From peter we can trace the unbroken chain from present day pope back to Peter the disciple (the first pope)
  • What do other denominations believe about the story?
Jesus pointed to the rock and said he will build the church upon the rock, a metaphor for Jerusalem where he was standing being the starting place for this universal message he had preached. Or was Jesus viewing the disciples as a body of people who were being handed the authority

  • What do Catholics believe about the authority of the church?
    - apostolic tradition and succession are equally important

  • Apostolic tradition and succession are equally important
Apostolic tradition is important because it includes the apostles, their teachings and messages passed down. It also includes constitutions of faith, the church sacrament and more. It is how the church and Jesus' teachings were spread. Apostolic succession is important because it continues the tradition and is the basis for the church's claim to authority. Succeed from apostles so many recognise their importance
  • Tradition and scripture are connected
Connected through the Holy Spirit. Rule in Catholicism is to embrace scripture and tradition because the church has the authority to interpret scripture correctly. The pope and the magisterium council continue to interpret the Bible today
  • What do Protestants believe about the church?
    - sola scriptura
    - the church is the creation of the word
    - priesthood of all believers
  • Sola scriptura
Sole authority of scripture. Sola Fide - justification by faith alone. The church is a servant to the scripture. Doctrine developed primarily by Martin Luther during the Protestant reformation. Luther claimed the only true authority is the word of God. Luther believed people should not pass judgement on God's word or try to claim parts of it is true or false. We have no right to tamper with the text because to do that is to become a teacher of the Holy Spirit who wrote scripture. Everyone subject to the authority of scripture
  • The church is the creation of the word
Without scripture there would be no word so the church cannot be the judge of scripture
  • Priesthood of all believers
All believers are priests and all stand equally before God. All believers have equal access to God through prayers without the need to be an ordained priest
