Density and factors that affect gas pressure

Cards (12)

  • Density - how much mass a substance has, per unit of volume
  • Gas in a closed container means the particles will be able to move around in random directions
  • When hitting a wall the particles rebound
  • Total pressure depends on 2 things: how many collisions, how much energy each collision involves.
  • Density equation
    density=density =mass/volume mass/volume
  • There are three things that affect this, they are temperature, concentration, and volume
  • Temperature - heating the gas means the thermal energy will be transferred into the kinetic energy stores. The particles when move around more, causing more collisions with the container wall
  • Pressure increases as temperature increases
  • Concentration - increasing the number of particles means there are more collisions
  • Pressure increases as concentration increases
  • Volume - making a container smaller means there are more particles per unit volume, so the pressure increases. Less space means more collisions with a wall.
  • As volume decreases, pressure increases
