Particle model and states of matter

Cards (11)

  • Particle (kinetic) theory - the particles are small, inelastic and tiny spheres
  • Solids - strong forces of attraction, held together in a fixed position, has a regular lattice structure.
  • Solids - a definite shape and volume so it can't flow. Particles can vibrate
  • The temperature at which a solid become a liquid is called the melting point.
  • The temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas is called the boiling point
  • Liquid - Weak forces of attraction, free to move around. Particles are arranged randomly
  • Liquid - weak forces of attraction means the particles stick together and compact
  • Liquid - Particles have a definite volume, and the shape can change allowing it to flow
  • Gas - Very weak forces of attraction, free to move anywhere
  • Gas - no definite shape or volume and will always fill a container
  • Gas - particles are constantly moving with a random direction
