• When the author first moved away from home, communicating with their parents involved a shared payphone or telephone box
• Mobile phone


  Enables quick and cheap sending and receiving of emails, instant messaging, social networking, and voice calls, as well as using the built-in GPS to find location and share it with others
• The author can use their mobile phone's built-in GPS to plot their location on a website to let friends and family see where they are (or at least where their phone is)
