  observation: pop sound heard
• test for oxygen: glowing splint held in test tube of oxygen

  observation: splint relights
• test for carbon dioxide: gas bubbled through limewater

  observation: limewater turns cloudy
• test for chlorine: damp (blue) litmus paper held in test tube of chlorine

  observation: paper turns white
