  • From the beginning of the first 5 year plan (1928 to 1932) real wages fell by 50% and not until 1954 did they start to reach the level of the early 1920s
  • Wage differentials increased substantially as a result of piece rate payments
  • Fines were used often (10% of wages) for petty wrongdoings and workers were often threatened of being purged
  • In 1932 a 10 to 12 hour working day was the norm. Stalin claimed the demands of the first 5 year plan meant workers had to endure a longer working day
  • In 1939 there was a 7 hour working day to reward workers for their efforts in implementing the 5 year plans
  • GPW- all men between 16 and 55 and all women between 16 and 50 were drafted into the war effort- either military or civilian
  • GPW- Women were expected to joint the armed forces as well as war production. Attempts to avoid the labour draft were punished by imprisonment or death.
  • Piece-rate pay gives a payment for each item produced – it is therefore the easiest way for a business to ensure that employees are paid for the amount of work they do. Piece-rate pay is also sometimes referred to as a "payment by results system".
