  • Housing conditions deteriorated in Moscow in the mid 1930s. 25% of the population was living in one room shared between 2 or more households
  • Living space fell from 8.5 square metres in 1905 to 5.8 square metres in 1935
  • After WWII over 25 million Russians were made homeless
  • GPW- rural migration put more pressure on housing. There was some hosuing and rebuilding but conditions remained poor for many in communal appartments
