  • During WWI there were problems with getting foodstuffs into urbanised areas- bread queues of eight hours or longer became the norm
  • WWI- there was a reduction in food supplies in order to feed the army. By 1917, food rations in Petrofrad were a quarter of 1914 rations. This led to migration as many left cities to return to villages in search for food
  • RJW- the cost of war in conjunction with a poor harvest led to increased food prices
