• There was some opposition but it was limited as the peasants were not yet politicised.
• The Crimean war provoked a spate of uprisings. In 1834 to 1835 there were 216 peasant uprisings and in 1845 to 1854 there were 348 peasant uprisings
• The peasant uprisings provoked the emancipation decree - AII thought it better to abolish the system from above than wait for it to be abolished from below.
• Peasant uprisings weren't the only reason for emancipation.
• There was failure from the peasants to oppose the Tsar, even when pushed by Land and Liberty, showing they still viewed the Tsar as a father.
• Peasant protests were controlled by the army
