• the Party coup of 1957, orchestrated by Molotov, Kaganovich and Malenjov failed. They were defeated by Khrushcehv's control of the party and support by the army
• The internal party coup in 1964 was successful, as it deposed Khrushchev
• There were intellectual discontents which were presented through books, some of which were published like One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
