Cards (17)

  • Digital signal

Discrete or discontinuous signals such as a sequence of voltage pulses, can have only a limited number of defined values often as simple as 1 and 0
  • Analog signal

Continuously varying electromagnetic wave, is a continuous wave form that changes smoothly over time
  • Bit
Smallest unit of information, represents either 0 or 1
  • Byte
    A string of 8 bits
  • Bit rate

Total bits that travel per second, measured in bits per second (bps)
  • Baud rate
Total number of times changes of signal occurs in a second
  • Frequency
Number of waves that pass a fixed place in a given amount of time, measured in Hertz (Hz)
  • Bandwidth
Capacity to carry information or data, the maximum amount of data transmitted over a connection in a given time, measured in Hertz (Hz)
  • Modem
Device that connects a computer to an internet service provider, converts digital data to analog signals and vice versa
  • Types of modem
    • Cable modem
    • Modem eliminator
    • DSL modem
    • Short-haul modem
  • Data codes
Rules to convert strings of bits into characters to enable computer communication, examples include Morse code, Baudot code, ASCII, EBCDIC, Unicode
  • Data code characteristics
    • Standard ASCII (7 bits, 128 characters)
    • Extended ASCII (8 bits, 256 characters)
    • EBCDIC (8 bits, 256 characters)
    • Unicode (16 bits, 65,536 characters)
  • The telephone system enables people to communicate by converting human voice into a signal that can be transmitted over telephone lines
  • Telephone network

    • Local end office/central office (CO)/exchange office (EO) is where call switching takes place
    • Local loop is the wires connecting home to end office
  • Telephone lines use voice-grade circuits, the lowest grade line used for voice telephone calls and dial-up lines
  • Multiplexing is used to combine many calls on a single telephone line, using guardbands to separate the calls
  • Telephone signals are used to indicate the various status of calls on the network, such as dial tone, ringing, busy
