  • henry and castles
began razing castles after coronation because there were 365 adulterine castles in england. after he took them back henry’s power was more distributed protecting him from the rebels in all areas
  • william the lion invasion

easter 1174, the invasion failed because henry’s castles were too strong. he failed to capture wark, carlisle and prudhoe castles. this shows there was no threat at all as henry was not even in england, he did not arrive until 8th July.
  • william the lions capture
he was captured at alnwick castle on 13th july 1174. this showed castles were strategic and the rebellion ended

he was refused control of norwich and had pre-existing conflict with framlingham castle. YH fueled him to join by offering him norfolk at the march and april council of barons in paris
  • louis
louis 7 enabled YH to bribe the barons. this was a threat having louis on his side because louis is known to be able to manipulate family life to anger henry like when henry refused to give brother geoffrey anjou and he threatened to ally with louis. same as the november 1172 family reunion in paris where louis planted the seed and when louis knighted richard in april 1173
  • philip of flanders’s
offered kent and £1000 a year. having him on Yh’s side was a threat as he was incredibly militarily capable

  • henry’s forces
he had the brabanter mercenaries which helped him win and reduced threat as they helped him be mobile, he moved from rouen to dol in normandy in just 2 days. henry took 60 knights and 400 archers to storm richard’s base in a cathedral. no threat and richard immediately asked for forgiveness on 23rd september 1174
