Sexual Reproduction
Involves 2 parents
Offspring inherit half of their trait information from one parent, and half from the other, making the offspring genetically distinct
Asexual Reproduction
Only requires one parent
Trait information from the parent is passed down to the offspring
The offspring is therefore an exact copy of the parent
Internal Fertilization
Occurs inside the organism's body
External Fertilization
Occurs outside the organism's body
Binary Fission
An organism divides into two, each half develops into a new organism
Budding
A tiny bud grows on some parts of the parent organism's body, falls off and becomes an independent organism
Fragmentation and Regeneration
Separated pieces of the parent organism can develop into a whole individual
Petal
Their vibrant colors and alluring scents are nature's way of attracting pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds
Sepal
Typically green in color and located at the base of the flower
Encloses the developing bud
Stamen
It is the male reproductive organ of a flower, typically consisting of an
anther
and a
filament
Anther
is where pollen grains are produced and stored
Filament
supports the anther
Pistil
It is the female reproductive organ found in the center of a flower
Stigma
is the sticky surface at the top of the pistil where pollen is received
Style
is the tube-like structure that connects the stigma to the ovary
Ovary
is the swollen base of the pistil that contains the ovule, which develop into seeds once fertilized
Pollination
Refers to the transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma
Stages of Sexual Reproduction in Plants
Pollination
Fertilization
Seed Dispersal
Germination
Runners
New plants arise from the nodes of a
horizontal
stem above the ground
Tubers
Swollen, underground stem that stores food and forms a new plant
Bulbs
Short underground stems that has fleshy leaves that stores food
Rhizome
Horizontal underground plant stem capable of producing the shoot and root systems of a new plant
