  • Bauhaus Movement
The fundamental objective was a novel idea: to reimagine the physical world in such a way that it reflects the unity of all arts. The geometric, abstract style of the Bauhaus movement lacked any sentiment or historical references. Bauhaus was rational, functional design aesthetic that took a form follows function, less is more approach that still resonates today.
  • Bauhaus
Art and design movement formed in 1919 in Germany by Walter Gropius
  • Bauhaus
    • Geometric pure forms (inspired by Art Deco)
    • Embracing machine age (in agreement with Arts and Crafts rebelled against ornamentation in design, but in contrast was keen to use machine based manufacturing processes)
    • Aimed to be true to materials and relinquish ornamentation (instead focussing on the aesthetic associated with the manufacturing process)
    • Everyday products for everyday people: after WW1, keen to embrace modern manufacturing techniques as a method of providing affordable products for the whole population. Importantly another reason why ornamentation was avoided
    • Form follows function: i.e. aesthetic appearance is dictated by the way it works
