  • Columbian Exchange
    The exchange of diseases, ideas, food, crops, and populations between the New and Old World following the voyages to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492
  • Joint Stock Company
    A type of business in which shares of a company’s stock can be bought by a shareholder
  • Pueblo Revolt
    An uprising of the Pueblo people against the Spanish. The goal was to reclaim Pueblo Religious practices, culture, and land. This was a successful rebellion
  • Powhatan Confederacy
    Consisted of 30+ Algonquian-speaking indigenous tribes. They occupied modern-day Virginia and Maryland. They were name after Chief Powhatan and had uneasy relations with English settlers
  • Jamestown
    The first permanent settlement in the colonies. Founded in 1607 in modern-day Virginia by John Smith
  • Chesapeake Colonies
    Made up of Virginia and Maryland. These colonies had fertile soil suitable to grow cash crops like tobacco, indigo, and cotton
  • Great Puritan Migration
    The period of time where English Puritans migrated to New England in what is now Massachusetts. Their colony was Plymouth
  • Puritans
    Believed that the Anglican Church needed to be purified. Had a very literal interpretation of the Bible
  • King Phillip’s War
    A war between New England colonists and Native Americans, led by the Wampanoag tribe
  • Mayflower Compact
    The first self-governing document in the colonies. It set up the colony of Plymouth
  • Caste System
    A class structure that is determined by birth
  • Great Awakening
    A religious revival in the British colonies. This led to religious liberty in the colonies
  • Enconmienda
    A labor system introduced by the Spanish to the colonies. The Spanish were given a number of Native American laborers
  • House of Burgesses
    The first legislative body in America
  • Newport Slave Market
    Largest slave port in America
  • Scots Irish
    A group of immigrants who lived in the frontier
  • Harvard
    First college in the colonies
  • Wampanoag
    This tribe united all of the tribes that fought in King Phillip’s War
  • Zenger Case
    A man named John Peter Zenger exposed the corrupt government of New York was sued. This case established freedom of the press
  • Town Meetings
    A meeting to discuss issues and to elect people to govern the town
  • Quakers
    Aka the Society of Friends. Quakers mostly lived in Pennsylvania and were non-violent
  • Triangular Trade
    Trade between three regions
  • Bacon’s Rebellion
    An uprising of indentured servants in Virginia. This was led by Nathaniel Bacon
