Metals

Cards (10)

  • Ferrous metals contain iron so they corrode quickly.
  • Mild steel is a ferrous metal and a low-carbon steel. It is relatively affordable compared to other steels, easy to machine and weld. Used in structural steel for buildings, signs, car bodies, panels and wire.
  • Stainless steel is a ferrous metal. It has high resistance to corrosion, it is tough and ductile with high strength and temperature resistance. Used in medical equipment, kitchen utensils and appliances, and hardware.
  • Cast iron is a ferrous metal. It is heavy and has good compressive strength, but is quite brittle and can crack/shatter under impact. It has a low melting point, and more resistant to wear + corrosion than mild steel. Used in pipework, engines, cooking utensils, and furniture.
  • Aluminium is a non-ferrous metal. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio as it is lightweight. It has a shiny, attractive appearance. It is easy to cut, shape and weld. Used in drinks cans, foils, window frames, and planes.
  • Copper is a non-ferrous metal. It has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity that does not corrode easily. It is touch but ductile, so easily shaped. Used in water pipes, electrical cables, jewellery, and statues.
  • Brass is a non-ferrous metal that is an alloy. It has good resistance to wear and corrosion, with an attractive appearance. Used for nuts, bolts, screws, and instruments.
  • Malleable means it can be hammered and bend into shape without breaking.
  • Ductile means it can be stretched into a thin wire without becoming weaker or brittle in the process.
  • Hardness is the resistance to impact and abrasion.
