  • “None the less natural to me because they were the expression, and bore the stamp, of lower elements in my soul”
    • A description of Hyde from Jekyll
    • ”lower elements”=The ability to be evil
    • Stevenson refuses to tell us what Hydes face looks like. He does this as he believes it’s ridiculous to be able to tell whether someone is good or evil by their face
    • Stevenson also doesn’t believe people are just good or just evil, but a mixture of both
  • “The large handsome face of Dr.Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes”
    • Dr.Jekyll=Very attractive. Stevenson implies this to state you cant tell how evil someone may be by there appearance
    • Instead, you need to look at their actions
  • “Blackness about his eyes”
Duality-There’s an evil desire beneath him
  • “A large well made, smooth faced man of fifty, with something of a stylish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness”
    • Duality
    • ”perhaps”-Jekyll looks stylish and kind, but under the surface, it’s a different story
