“Under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway. At the horror of these sights and sounds, the maid fainted”
“The maid fainted”=Typical of Victorian literature
The maid didn’t really faint, she was so excited about retelling the story of this murder
Stevenson is making fun of the traditions of the gothic, that female would’ve wanted
He also does this by making the description ridiculous
Stevenson is mocking the addiction to violence which he feels his female readers have
“And many women of different nationalities passing out, key in hand, to have a morning glass”
From when Utterson visited SOHO, and he described the women
Women=Stepping out to drink gin in the morning-Alcoholics
Utterson is suggesting all women in SOHO are like this
Use of humour
“An ivory faced and silvery haired old woman opened the door. She had an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy; but her manners were excellent”
Description of Hydes housekeeper
Woman is linked to hypocrisy
Stevenson is saying the women are like the men
Women have excellent manners on the outside, like Jekyll
However, on the inside, they are evil like Hyde
The difference between men and women though is that women’s evilness is seen on their face. However, Jekylls evilness cannot be seen on his face, only on Hydes
