Matters of life + death

Cards (8)

  • Origin + value of universe
The scientific explanation for the origin of the universe is the Big Bang theory - an explosion which started the universe. Christians believe the story of Creation. They believe the world is a gift from God, created over six days. Some reject scientific theories completely. Whereas others believe the Big Bang and evolution are part of God's plan.
  • Sanctity of life

Christians believe human life is holy/sacred because it is a gift from God and therefore belongs to him. The Bible teaches Christians that God made them in his image. This refers to the idea that humans are special and different from the rest of Creation: God breathed life into them in a different way.
  • Human origins

The theory of evolution is that humans were a gradual development of species. Some think that this conflicts with what Christians claim about God creating everything. Some feel it's not compatible with the Bible so reject it. Other view evolution as part of God's plan.
  • Abortion
It’s the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. Pro-life arguments: life is sacred, all life has value and it's seen as murder. Pro-choice arguments: Jesus taught compassion, in cases of rape or incest it may be the kindest action and is best if the mother's life is at risk.
  • Life after death

Christian accept the existence of heaven and hell. Believing in life after death allows them to try to live their life well and please God so they achieve eternal life in heaven. They are comforted that their loved ones live on after death and it gives Christians a purpose in life.
  • Euthanasia
It’s the painless killing of someone who is dying. It is a controversial issue because some see it as murder, while others see it as a compassionate act. There are three different types of euthanasia: voluntary, assisted suicide and non-voluntary.
  • Issues in natural world

Christians believe they should care for the world; it's a sacred gift from God. They say that it is acceptable for animals to be used for food but some may choose to be vegetarian, as animals should not suffer.
  • "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
