1. The Brain

Cards (10)

  • Hypothalamus: regulates homeostasis, controls Pituitary Gland
-this means is keeps the body at set points regarding body temp, thirst, hunger, sleeping and waking.
  • Pituitary Gland: teeny tiny gland right below hypothalamus
-controls your thyroid, sex glands, pancreas, and the adrenal syste.
  • Hippocampus: located in each temporal lobe
-responsible for the formation of long term declarative memories
  • Amygdala: involved in fear responses and the memory of fear
-allows us to respond to danger very quickly, sometimes before we realize
  • Cerebellum: part of the lower brain, controls all the involuntary, rapid, fine motor functions
-sitting upright, coordination of rapid voluntary movements like walking, skating, running or throwing a ball
  • Medulla: located at the top of the spinal column, forms the lowest part of the brain
-responsible for life-saving functions such as breathing, swallowing, and heart rate
  • Pons: above the medulla
-connects the top of the brain to the bottom (plays a part in sleep, dreaming, body coordination and arousal
  • Reticular Formation: area of neurons that runs through the middle of the medulla and the pons
-plays a role in general arousal, alertness (fight or flight), and sleep
  • Limbic System: includes the Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Hippocampus, and Amygdala -involved in emotions, motivation, and learning
  • Thalamus: located in the center of the brain
-sensory info, takes in info from the body and sends them to processing (except smell)
