• Spanish sought colonies to extract wealth by agricultural means and mining for gold and silver
• Spanish subjugated the Native American population to extract the wealth they were after under the encomienda system
• When encomienda system failed, the spanish replaced it with force labor from African Americans
• Spanish created a caste system that organized society in a hierarchal system based on racial ancestry
• Spanish were deeply concerned with converting Native American to Christianity through the mission system (Some converted some didnt)
