    prepare the body for the morgue, prevent discoloration or deformity of the body, protect the body from post mortem discharge

  • Closing the eyes and mouth:
    • Eyes: bring upper lid down and apply gentle pressure
    • Mouth: bring jaws together by placing a rolled os or gauze or towel under the chin
  • Lividity - bluish- purple, discoloration of skin after death = cause by blood pooling at lowest point
  • Blanching - whitish, discoloration of skin = caused by applied pressure
  • Liver Mortis - pooling blood and discoloration, begins 30 minutes after death
  • Rigor Mortis - stiffened muscles, begins 2-4 hrs after death
  • Pallor mortis - skin becomes pale in colour. Normally has more of a grey appearance
  • Algor Mortis - cooling stage. Heat is lost thru radiation, convection, conduction, and evaporation
  • Rigor mortis - stiffness starts in the head (eyelids) and gradually works its way down the legs, stiffness disappears after 36 hours. Stiffness = occurs because skeletal muscle are unable to relax and remain contracted
  • Livor Mortis -corpse outside in hot summer day = livor mortis takes place faster. Cool = takes slower
  • Person maintains balance as long as line of gravity passes through center of gravity and base of support
  • Damaged cerebellum result in jerky, poorly coordinated movements
