    Some Jewish homes will have a mizrach which is a painted plaque showing the direction of Jerusalem in Israel
  • What is a mezuzah
    It will be on every doorpost except the bathroom. It contains words from the Shema (a Jewish prayer) and provides a sense of religious identity and a feeling of God's presence

    To remind Jews of the destruction of the Temple built by Solomon
  • What is Shabbat? - Intro
    • A Jewish celebration which is celebrated in the home.
    • Two candles will be placed on the dining table - represents the two commandments received by Moses on Mount Sinai ('remember ' and 'observe' the Sabbath)
    • Two loaves of challah bread will be placed to represent the food God provided the Jews when they were walking through the desert in flight from Egypt
    • It starts from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday
  • What is Shabbat? - Middle & End
    • Jews have a list of prohibited tasks (Avot Melakhah) during Shabbat (e.g. no electronics)
    • Shabbat starts when mother lights two candles
    • Readings from Torah will be read
    • Father will bless Kiddush cup
    • Havdalah service marks the end of Shabbat where spices are passed around to mark the beginning of a fresh weak
    • Kashrut laws is observed
