  • Dystopia is a state in which the conditions of human life are extremely bad as from deprivation or oppression or terror.
  • Dystopian societies are characterised by human misery, oppression, disease, overcrowding, environmental destruction, or war.
  • Surveillance: It would be all about the control by the government.
  • Loss of individuality: The concept of individuality disappears in dystopian writing. People are not individuals, they are parts of a whole, expected to conform and obey without question.
  • Fear of the outside world: Dystopian societies are cut off from the world. They portray the outside world as dangerous and full of unknown horrors.
  • Dehumanization: Dystopian societies often strip away the humanity of their citizens.
