  • What’s an artery and what do they do and look like?
An artery is a blood vessel which carry blood away from the heart.
They are strong and elastic and have a thick layers of muscle to allow them to be strong.
There walls are thick compared to the whole down the middle. (the hole is called lumen)
  • What are capillaries and what do they do and look like?
Tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins, responsible for diffusing substances out your blood. They are thin-walled and have a small diameter.
  • What are veins and what do they do and look like?
Veins carry blood away from your heart to the organs.
The blood is at a low pressure in the veins, this means there walls don’t need to be as thick as artery walls.
Veins have bigger lumens than arteries.
They also have valves, which help the blood flow through properly.
