the ATP-PC system

Cards (5)

  • what is the ATP-PC system?
this is an energy system that uses phosphocreatine (PC) as its fuel. PC is an energy rich phosphate compound which is found in the sarcoplasm of the muscles and can be broken down quickly and easily to release energy to re-synthesis ATP. it is a high intensity compound.
  • how does it provide energy?
when ATP levels in the muscles fall - this activates an enzyme called creatine kinase. it breaks down the phosphocreatine in the muscles to phosphate and creatine, releasing energy. this energy is then used to convert ADP to ATP in a coupled reaction.
  • key points
    fuel source - PC
    sight - sarcoplasm
    enzyme - creatine kinase
    yield energy - 1:1 (phospho - 1, creatine - 1)
by products - no by products
  • advantages of the ATP-PC system
    - high intensity energy (explosive)
    - rapid release of energy
    - no harmful by products
    - really accessible - already in the muscles
  • disadvantages of the ATP-PC system
    - short duration - doesn't last long (10 seconds)
    - inefficient energy yield - low
